Mask of the Outsider
A dark gateway to the Void that grants chosen souls the power to reshape reality.
The Mask of the Outsider is a legendary artifact forged from dark materials and imbued with the essence of the Void itself. It serves as the physical conduit through which the enigmatic entity known as the Outsider grants supernatural abilities to selected individuals across the Empire of the Isles. Lore & Background
Throughout history, the mask has moved from hand to hand, often appearing at moments of great tragedy or political upheaval. It is not merely a weapon but a symbol of free will in a world dominated by rigid dogmas and corrupt institutions. While the Abbey of the Everyman views such powers as heretical abominations, the Outsider sees them as necessary disruptions that allow humanity to evolve beyond its limitations.
In Their Own Story
The rain lashed against the cobblestones of the Lighthouse courtyard, masking the sound of Corvo's footsteps. Before him stood the pedestal, and upon it, the Mask. It was not gold or silver, but a swirling darkness that seemed to drink the light from the torches. As he reached out, the air grew cold, smelling of ozone and ancient dust. The moment his fingers brushed the surface, a voice echoed in his mind, neither male nor female, offering a choice: accept the gift or walk away into the shadows of a powerless life.
Reader's Guide
The Mask is acquired by visiting specific shrines known as Lighthouses, where the Outsider awaits the protagonist. Upon touching the mask, the player gains access to a suite of supernatural abilities drawn from the Void. These powers include teleportation, time manipulation, and mind control, among others. Each ability can be upgraded at these same lighthouses by spending Runes, which are collected by completing optional objectives or exploring hidden areas within the levels. Strategically, players must manage their limited supply of Runes to decide whether to focus on offensive capabilities like Possession or defensive tools like Blink and Time Bend. Upgrading a power often unlocks new tactical options, such as possessing multiple enemies simultaneously or slowing time for extended periods, allowing for stealthy or chaotic playstyles.
